The country’s mass media could play the important role in unveiling corruption to mobilise public opinion side by side with suggesting solutions in preventing corruption from the society.
The views were expressed yesterday at a views-sharing meeting with Journalists of Print and Electronic Media in Preventing Corruption organised by Rangpur District Corruption Prevention Committee (CPC) at the Training Centre of RDRS Bangladesh in Rangpur.
The District Combined Office of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and RDRS Bangladesh under Justice Reform & Corruption Prevention (JRCP) Project being funded by German Development Cooperation assisted in arranging the event.
With President of district CPC Professor Mozammel Haque in the chair, members and a large number of local journalists attended the meeting.
Deputy Director of District Combined Office of ACC Mozahar Ali Sarder and Assistant Director Atikur Rahman were present as the chief and special guests respectively.
General Secretary of district CPC Akbar Hossain delivered welcome speech narrating the present corruption situation seeking cooperation and suggestions of the media persons in forming an anti-corruption media group for building a corruption free society.
District Manager of JRCP Project Ershad Md Rasel discussed on the anti-corruption activities conducted so far and draft action plan on anti-corruption activities for the next three months.
The media persons narrated about the corruption situation prevailing in different service providing government offices and sought information on anti-corruption activities being conducted by ACC and forwarded suggestions to prevent those in national interests.
The chief guest provided the latest information on the number of cases filed and arrested persons in those connections said prevention of corruption is not possible only through creation and enforcement of the concerned laws.
He called upon the journalists for working as a team to create adequate public awareness for launching an effective movement involving the common people for eradicating corruption from every sphere of the society.
In his concluding speech, Professor Mozammel Haque termed media as the most powerful social watchdog and said that the journalists could monitor the quality of governance, frame discussion about corruption and provide voice to a wide range of perspectives.
“The journalists should file more news with statistics on corruption focusing its negative impacts on the national economy to create public awareness for launching an effective movement to prevent corruption from the society,” he said.
