UNB, Dhaka :
Petrobangla has suspended Managing Director of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) Habib Uddin Ahmed in connection with the
‘disappearance of 1.44 lakh tonnes of coal’ from the mine. Petrobangla Chairman Abul Mansur Md Faizullah said they took the action against the BCMCL MD on Thursday. Earlier, Habib Uddin was withdrawn from the BCMCL after the disappearance of coal came to the fore. The disappearance of coal came to light a few days back when a team from Power Development Board visited the coal mine and found that there was no adequate reserve of coal in the yard of the mine. As per the official investigation, the stock was found to have a shortage of 144,000 tonnes of coal. Petrobangla formed a three-member inquiry committee, headed by its director (mining) Quamruzzaman, to investigate the issue. On July 23, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) also formed a three-member probe committee to look into the ‘disappearance of coal’ from Barapukuria coal mine. On Tuesday last, a case was filed against 19 BCMCL officials, Habib Uddin, in connection with the ‘disappearance of 1.44 lakh tonnes of coal’ from the mine. Mohammad Anisur Rahman, BCMCL manager (administration), filed the case under sections 5(2) and 409 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act with Parbatipur Model Police Station on Tuesday night, said Habibul Haque Prodhan, officer-in-charge of the police station.
