MAZHARUL ISLAM A popular cine commentator

Mazharul Islam is such a popular cine commentator in the country who won the minds of many film-lovers by virtue of presenting his vocal. Jwi Haa Bhai, Ami Apnader Binodon Bondhu Mazharul Islam (Yes brother, I am yours’ entertainment friend Mazharul Islam) – this dialogue is being uttered still now in different current programmes of Bangladesh Betar. After independence of Bangladesh, this loud-voiced commentator’s great achievement was to present Bojrokontho programme on Betar before broadcasting news. In that Bojrokontho, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic March 7 Speech was broadcasted on Betar for five minutes. It was regularly broadcasted till August 14, 1975. It was not broadcasted later.
While talking in this regard Mazharul Islam said, “Many persons who worked in Betar’s Transcription Service after death of Bangabandhu they had to face repression to preserve Bangabandhu’s historic March 7 Speech. Among them, Independence Award winner respected Ashraful Alam and Shahidul Islam’s names are mentionable.”
Hailed from Sirajganj, Mazharul Islam started his journey in Betar as its Staff Artiste in 1969. Later, he worked as host and drama actor in Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. For this reason, he is called a ‘sound warrior.’ In July of 1972, he started work in Transcription Service at Betar. His hosted three programmes Rongdhonu, Bondhon and Antorongo Sanglap got popularity among the listeners during that time. In 1973 and 1974, he hosted two folk festivals where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was present.
As hero, Mrittuhin Pran was Mazharul Islam-starrer first play at Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. But late Abdullah Al Mamun’s play Jollader Fasi was Mazharul Islam-starrer first play on Betar. Atiqul Islam Chowdhury’s Durer Pakhira was his acted first TV play. He was also commentator of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra’s popular show Bikkhubdho Bangla.
Mazharul Islam acted in many films. His acted first film was Meher Aziz directed Bichar. But before releasing this film, his acted and Kabir Anwar directed film Slogan was released earlier.
According to him, he acted in more than 300 plays in Betar till now. He lent his voice for Betar’s three mentionable lyrical designs – Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Sristi Sukher Ullasey, Rabindranath Tagore’s Shishutirtho and Sukanto’s Hey Mohamanob. These programmes were scripted and produced by Mustafa Anwar.
Mazharul Islam has been hosting various musical shows of different companies. During the release of late Salman Shah and Moushumi-starrer their debut film Keyamat Theke Keyamat he introduced themselves for the first time to the audience in Betar. After death of Salman Shah, he also brought Shabnur on the studio to commemorate Salman Shah in a programme.
Listeners first heard names of Subir Nandi, Andrew Kishore and Farida Parveen in his voice. On Saturday, on the occasion of National Mourning Day, in commercial programme of Betar from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, Chironjeeb Bangabandhu was broadcasted where Mazharul Islam played the role of Bangabandhu. But he yet not get any state honour.
“Many organisations invite me to attend their programmes as special guest or host and then they present me a doll worth Tk three to four hundreds. This type of honour doesn’t give any pleasure to any artiste,” he said with anger.
