Court Correspondent :
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday summoned columnist and poet Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida Akhter January 30 to the court in a case on charges, police brought against him.
Magistrate Subrata Ghosh Shuvo of the CMM Court ordered the couple on Sunday to appear before the CMM Court on January 30, their counsel Syed Joynul Abedin Mejbah told newsmen. Police charged them with misleading law enforcers, giving false information.
On December 28, Police Inspector Mahbubul Haque of Detective Branch (DB) lodged the case with Adabar Police Station against Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida.
The DB official investigated the abduction case that Farida Akhter lodged after her husband Farhad went missing on July 3 and submitted a probe report before a court of Dhaka on November saying Mazhar ‘staged an abduction drama’ to get money from his family.
His family alleged in a police complaint, which was later recorded as a case, that he was abducted after he had left home early in that morning. Later, Farhad was found in a bus in Abhaynagar of Jessore about 18 hours after the incident.
On Nov 14, investigators filed their report with the court, where they said no truth was found in the claim that the columnist had been abducted and sought permission to prosecute the columnist’s wife for filing a false report. The final investigation report says the case initiated by Farida Akhter is fabricated and it was done in a bid to cover up the actual events.
On Dec 7, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate held a hearing over the probe report and accepted the police’s plea to start a case against the couple. Two days’ after the order of the court, Farhad held a press conference at his home and told newsmen that he was a victim of abduction and rejected the law enforcers’ claim. He did everything on the instruction of his captors to save his life, Farhad added.
Besides, Farhad Mazhar said that the statement he submitted before a Dhaka court was scripted by police, while police denied the claim.
The couple faces a maximum of seven years in the prison as well financial penalties if found guilty.
