The mayors of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Friday said that they were sorry about the city residents’ sufferings from Chikunguniya disease.
They, however, firmly assured the people of eliminating Chikunguniya carrying mosquitos by using effective insecticide around the capital.
The Mayors of DNCC Annisul Huq and DSCC Sayeed Khokon said this in separate press conferences held in their offices on Friday.
In a press briefing on awareness building campaign against Chikungunya, Annisul Huq said the City Corporation also had taken all possible steps in this regard.
“We have taken all measures for mosquito control and Chikungunya prevention, but some factors are not under our control”, the mayor said.
Aedes mosquitoes breed in clear water that is mostly kept inside homes and residences. “We cannot go inside the houses to control mosquitoes from spreading.” he added.
Epidemiologist Professor Mahmudur Rahman, Entomologists Tauhiduddin Ahmed and Dr Manjur A Chowdhury were also present in the briefing to share information on the recent spread of Chikunguniya.
They said the present Chikunguniya situation could be termed as an epidemic. But it is solely a matter of the government, they viewed.
Meanwhile, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon in another press conference hoped that Chikunguniya would be under control of the City Corporation within three to four weeks.
