Mayor of Chittagong AJM Nasir Uddin said the city corporation decided to use municipal garbage to produce composts and power as part of a waste management plan.
“The garbage is so far one of the prime reasons for causing peoples sufferings and environmental pollution . we are planning to utilize the wastes by turning those into economic resources,” he told a workshop on waste management at Chittagong City Corporation’s (CCC) K B Abdus Sattar auditorium on Wednesday.
The mayor said the CCC already chalked up plans with foreign development assistance and technologies to implement the idea and expected the port city to take a cleaner and greener look in next three years.
Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and City Governance Project of the local government ministry staged the workshop, chaired by CCC’s Chief Executive Mohammad Shafiul Alam.City Governance Project’s director Mohammad Shahjahan Mollah, panel Mayor Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni, CCC councilors Niser Uddin Ahmed Monju, Nazmul Hoque Duke, Shafiul Alam, CCC chief engineer Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, Chief Education Officer Nazia Shirine and chief conservancy officer Sheikh Shafiqul Mannan Siddique among others addressed the workshop.
