Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Saturday vowed that chikungunya will be eliminated from the areas under his jurisdiction within the next 10 days.
“My mother has also been affected with Chikungunya. So I feel the pain of all mothers. I assured all of you that DSCC will have chikungunya under control within the next 10 days,” Sayeed Khokon said while inaugurating a chikungunya awareness rally of councilors, civil society members and NGO delegates from the Nagar Bhaban.
Sources said, Sayeed Khokon’s mother Fatima Hanif was suffering from the chikungunya for the last few days.
On July 14, the DSCC mayor said that it could take three to four weeks to control the disease.
“Eight days later I stand before you and say the DSCC area will be free from chikungunya within the next 10 days,” the mayor said.
He said the rapid pace was possible, thanks to the determined efforts by city corporation workers and the increased awareness of the city dwellers.
The mayor also cautioned that the people should not loose their guard after the abolition the disease. He laid stress on the need for vigilance to prevent the return of the disease.
