Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has slapped accusation of bribery on chiefs of the district administration and police and said they are not taking effective steps to ease traffic congestions in the city.
She brought the accusation while speaking to citizen journalists of blog.bdnews24.com at Nagar Bhaban on Sunday.
“Those, who come to Narayanganj as DC and SP, paid bribes to be here. So, they get busy retrieving the money without thinking about the people’s welfare,” she said. Her response came when citizen journalist Nitai Babu asked the mayor about her plan to free the people of the city from traffic congestions. The discussion continued for about 45 minutes. “The pavements have been grabbed illegally.
Police are collecting money from the illegal shops on the footpaths that are also using illegal power connections. I was vocal against these once,” Ivy replied. “But is these my duty alone? Has the DC and SP nothing to do?” she asked.
She said, the city corporation often conducts drives against illegal rickshaws to ease traffic congestions.
“Though we are taking steps against the people of lower-middle income class, the district administration and the police are not taking any step against the huge number of illegal buses and trucks in the city,” Ivy said.
She said it was the duty of traffic police department to act against illegal grabbers of roads and footpaths and vehicles.
“The law enforcers are supporting the mayors in Dhaka. But we don’t get the cooperation here,” she said.
The mayor also blamed an illegal truck stand at Nitaiganj for the traffic congestions and alleged tens of millions of taka were being collected from the stand in the name of extortion for police and several workers’ organisations. She said a case was filed against the district administration and police to relocate the truck stand. “But the DC and the SP do not pay any heed to even High Court orders,” she added.
Ivy pointed fingers at human-hauler and air-conditioned bus services, which she says were running illegally, for the traffic congestions. She threatened to stop drives against ‘the poor’s transport’ rickshaws if the ‘illegal transports of the rich’ are not removed. Admitting the city corporation’s failure to control Air pollution, she said the construction work of buildings and other structures were causing the pollution.
“There is no outcome after fines are slapped in regular drives,” she said, adding that the city corporation does not have its own magistrates and police to conduct the drives.
She expressed hope that the situation will improve once city governance system is launched with the help of Japanese aid agency JICA. Speaking about steps to prevent pollution of the river Shitalakkhya, she said there was no result after several movements in this regard.
“The Department of Environment knows better what it will do,” she said.
