City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said that a mausoleum would be built at Shishu Park area in Kazir dewri after expiry of its contract in 2017.
He said there is only one Shaheed Minar in the second largest city Chittagong in which people pay homage on the Independence Day, International Mother Language Day, Martyred Intellectual Day and the Victory Day.
“The proposed mausoleum should be in prime location and the old Chittagong Circuit House premises, endowed with rich memories of the country’s Liberation War, would be a befitting one for it”, the mayor said.
The declaration of the mayor came while presiding over a reception accorded to 150 freedom fighters and 11 Biranganas at city’s Engineers’ Institution on Monday.
Assistant High Commissioner of India in Chittagong Somnath Haldar, Russian Consulate General in Chittagong Oleg P. Boyko, former lawmaker Ishak Mia, lawmakers Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and Sabiha Musa, District Commander of Mutijuddha Sangsad Mohammad Shahab Uddin, city commander Mozaffar Ahmed, Chittagong city Awami League vice-president Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, chairman of Liberation War Research Trust Dr Mahfuzur Rahman, Chittagong Press Club president Kalim Sarwar, former General Secretary Nizam Uddin Ahmed and chairman of Chittagong Journalists Cooperatives Housing Society Moinuddin Kaderi Showkot, among others, addressed it.
Speaking on the occasion, District Commander of Mutijuddha Sangsad Mohammad Shahab Uddin, said the initiative of constructing houses for 10 freedom fighters every year taken by Chittagong City Corporation would be a milestone and imitable for other city corporations too.
