Neo-JMB leader Nurul Islam Marzan and his aide Saddam Hossain were killed in a shootout with law enforcers in Dhaka in the small hours of Friday, police said.
Marzan was the operational commander of last year’s (July 1) Holey Artisan Bakery attack, and Saddam, an accused murderer of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi, were shot dead in a gun-battle with a unit of counter-terrorism police near Mohammadpur Beribandh area in Dhaka.
Saddam alias Rahul was also one of the organisers of Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, in northern Bangladesh, according to police.
The gun-battle took place in the small hours of Friday, said Monirul Islam, Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Marzan was the operational commander and a mastermind of the Holey Artisan Bakery attack, while Saddam was accused in 10 murder cases, said Monirul Islam, Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Among the cases, charge-sheets were submitted in five cases mentioning his name, Monirul said.
The charge sheeted cases are sensational murders of Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur, Rahamat Ali Khadem in Rangpur, Bahai Ruhur
Amin in Rangpur, head of Debiganj Math in Panchgarh and Hosen Ali in Kurigram.
And the other cases are killings of doctor Dipti in Gaibandha, Rabbi of Shaghata in Gaibandha and Tarun Datta of Gobindaganj in Gaibandha, and attempt to murder of Karbala’s Khadem in Nilphamari and Doctor Birnodro of Chirirbandar in Dinajpur. Acting on secret information, Mohammadpur police set up a temporary check post in front of the graveyard on Babubazar-Gubtali road, said Mohibul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of CTTC.
When the police challenged a motorbike carrying two persons, the criminals hurled several bombs on the law-enforcers prompting a retaliation that triggered a “gunfight” between them. At one stage, the two was caught in the line of fire. Police recovered the bodies and sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy, Mohibul said.
Mohammadpur Police sent two bodies to DMCH for autopsy, said Bachchu Mia, Sub-Inspector of the hospital police outpost. Police also recovered a pistol, three rounds of bullet, a knife and a motorbike from the spot.
