A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent the Master of Mayur-2 launch, Abul Bashar Mollah, on 3-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over the recent Buriganga launch accident that claimed at least 34 lives.
Judge of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court of Dhaka, AFM Maruf Chowdhury, passed the order after holding hearing on a petition placed by Investigation Officer of the case, Shahidul Alam, also a sub-inspector of the Sadarghat river police unit.
Earlier on the day the Investigation Officer
produced him in the court and prayed for 10-day remand.
In the remand prayer, the IO said that Bashar was on board while another launch staff, Nasir Mridha, was steering the launch when it hit another launch Morning Bird on that day. So, he needs to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incident, the IO added.
On the other hand, defense lawyer Shahjalal submitted a petition, seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer. After hearing both sides, the court turned down his bail petition and placed him on remand for three day.
RAB arrested Abul Bashar (65) from a house in South Keraniganj area around 1:00am on July 13.
On June 29, Morning Bird, a launch from Munshiganj, capsized within seconds in the Buriganga near Farashganj terminal after it was hit by Mayur-2, a Dhaka-bound launch from Chandpur. On June 30, Sadarghat River Police Station filed a case with Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station accusing Mayur-2 launch Master Abul Bashar Mollah and six others for the accident.
