Massive vegetable farming in a Jhenaidah village

The eyes can’t belief that each and every inch of the house is covered by any type of vegetables. Even the road side fallow land is cultivated for Napier grass and Thai variety of lemon.
The children abide their parents work inside the house at their convenient time. Under the Mujibnagar Integrated Agriculture Development Project (MIADP) has encouraged the family go ahead.
They widely known and admired by the people crossing the house at a rural village of Sailkuapa upazila in Jhenaidah, about 27 kilometres from the district head quarters.
Anwara Begum, 40, a house wife of Dhaura village under Sailkupa upazila while working on her onion plot at the court yard said, she has been farming summer onion on a decimal of land this season under the MIADP as a demonstration one. She transplanted the saplings in late August and expecting harvesting during mid November this year. At least 80 kilograms of onion will ensure Taka 4,000 from the plot, she said.
Aminul Biswas, the husband of Anwara Begum during nursing the summer tomato on the same plot said, he has been cultivating the same on his two decimals of land in the current summer also as demonstration.
He had sold at least 100 kilograms of matured tomato in past four weeks for Taka 9,000 and expecting another Taka 20,000 from the plot in coming six weeks. The price was better as it was produced in the summer.
The farmer said, the farming of summer tomato was a profitable crop as no other vegetables could ensure such profit.
The couple said, they have been farming vegetables on a total of 21 decimals of land at the house premises where various types of vegetables like egg plant, chili, bitter guord, turmeric, red amaranths and other vegetables were produced.
Further, they have been producing Gandary variety of sugarcane for oral consumption in front of the house. Bedana and some valuable fruits are produced there.
Showing the Napier grass on the road side in-front the house, the couple said, they produce the grass there round the year brings more money.
Their two sons, studying in the honours third year and another in first year in the higher secondary level have been assisting the couple at their convenient time, while the youngest was studying in class four, they said.
Anwara Begum said, a number of people in the village and some neighboring villages witnessing the success of their farming have been showing their interest in cultivating the summer tomato and onion next seasons.
Sub assistant agriculture officer of the department of agriculture extension in Dhalaharachandra block in Sailkupa Nirajul Islam, repeat Nirajul said, they have been motivated the farmers for the MIADP as they were widely known for their contribution in vegetable farming in the locality.
Upazila agriculture officer Sanjay Kundu when contacted said, the farming under Mujibnagar Integrated Agriculture Development Project would strengthen the socio-economic state of the farmers for its positive impact on the production throughout the project area.
