The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken massive programme to cultivate winter vegetables in seven upazilas of the district during the current season.
The DAE sources said under the programme, a total of 6,600 hectares of land would be brought under the cultivation with the production target of 112,200 tonnes of winter vegetables.
The district is suitable place for producing huge vegetables including cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, bean, radish, carrot, guard, bottle guard, cucumber and brinjal, the sources added.
Many farmers of the district have started showing keen interest to bring more farm lands under vegetable farming as they could easily get better yielding rate of the vegetables by reducing their production costs.
Prosanto Kumar Saha, deputy director of DAE, said the field workers have started rendering field-level service to let the cultivators know about the modern methods of vegetable cultivation for achieving best yielding rate through lower production costs.
