Massive plantation for habitable planet stressed

Vice-chancellor (VC) of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) Professor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi here today stressed for massive tree plantation to leave a healthier and habitable planet for the next generations.
He said massive forestation through tree plantation everywhere would create an eco-friendly and eye-catching green nature to cope with adverse impacts of climate change bringing environmental equilibrium and economic development.
The VC, also noted population scientist, said this while planting tree saplings ceremonially in the university campus to launch the ‘Tree Plantation and Campus Beautification Programme in BRUR’ during the current season as the chief guest.
Under the programme, over 2,000 fruit, wood and medicinal tree saplings would be planted in the campus from the residence of the VC to the academic buildings, in both sides from the adjoining highway to Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall.

Inspiring the students in tree plantation, the VC said the young generations would remain as inseparable part of national history by advancing the nation as your forefathers became so through liberating the country fighting the War of Liberation in 1971.
He called upon everybody of all ages, including the students and younger generations, for planting at least one tree sapling annually, talking care of the planted saplings and reminded that the better deeds of today will become the history of the future.

BSS from Rajshahi adds: Promotion of adequate fruit trees is very important for ensuring nutritional demands coupled with food security, ecological balance and biodiversity, speakers at a discussion said.
Highlight the various significances of the fruit and fruit trees in terms of the present social and national aspects they put emphasis on transforming the tree plantation campaign into a social movement.
The speakers made this observation while addressing the inaugural session of a five-day Fruit Tree Fair-2015 organized by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and District Administration at Green Plaza of City Bhaban here yesterday afternoon.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Munir Hossain, who addressed the session as the chief guest, stressed extensive tree plantation to improve environment and biodiversity to make the region habitable for all.
With DAE Deputy Director Hazrat Ali in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Azahar Ali, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Paba Kaisarul Islam, Additional Deputy Director of DAE Ahmed Shafi and nursery owners Liton Sarker and Shaheduzzaman Sarker also spoke.
Marking the opening ceremony, some schoolboys were given fruit tree saplings in order to motivating them towards more tree plantation.
“Expansion of the country’s forest area up to 25 percent of the total landscape through extensive tree plantations will protect the country from possible alarming consequences of the ongoing climate changes,” said the chief guest.
Explaining various beneficial aspects of trees and homestead gardening in human life, he urged all to plant at least three tree saplings around their homesteads to help maintain environmental and ecological balance.
He termed the tree plantation as a big investment and said many people have been changing their lots through establishing nurseries and making orchards garden at present.
On the occasion, DAE Officer Yeasin Ali presented a keynote paper on “Contribution of Fruit and Fruit Trees in Poverty Reduction and Nutritional Security” emphasizing the need for providing all possible assistances towards fruit farming for boosting its yield.
They said there is no alternative to plant more saplings to protect the ecology after facing the adverse effect of Farakka barrage in the region.
All concerned should put in their best effort to make the region green by increasing fruit trees area.
Different government and non-government organizations and individuals including nursery owners and local entrepreneurs have set up more than 44 stalls in the fair premises displaying saplings of over 250 species of tree saplings.
