Massive plan to cultivate winter vegetables in Narsingdi

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a massive plan to cultivate 9,200 hectares of land for winter vegetables in the six upazilas of the district during the current season.
Of the total land, some 1,200 hectares would be brought under vegetables cultivation in Sadar upazila, 600 hectares in Polash upazila, 1,825 hectares in Shibpur upazila, 2,250 hectares in Belabo upazila, 650 hectares in Monohardi upazila and 2,675 hectares in Raipura upazila, the DAE sources said.
Latafat Hossain, Deputy Director of DAE, said the farmers in the meantime have already started cultivation various kinds of vegetables such as cauli-flower, gourd, cabbage, brinjal, bean, radish, pumpkin, Potato, tomato, lal shak and palung shak.
He said the department is encouraging the farmers to cultivate pesticides free vegetables and provided them knowledge on the bad effects of using pesticides and chemical fertilizers on vegetables fields and also gave them training on pest management.
He said, this year the DAE has set a target to cultivate pesticides free vegetables on 1200 hectares of land in the district. The farmers are now producing pesticides free vegetables using compost instead of chemical fertilizers and poisonous pesticides.
The Deputy Director said necessary steps have been taken to ensure supply of quality seeds, fertilizers and other agri inputs among the growers at fair price for producing 140,000 tonnes of winter vegetables during the current season.
