The BNP on Tuesday alleged of widespread irregularities in 50 per cent of polling stations in the Khulna City Corporation polls.
“Muscle men of ruling Awami League forcing out of BNP candidate’s polling agents, stuffing ballots, assaulting and intimidating our supporters, in about 50 per cent of the total voting centres. The Election Commission played totally silent role about BNP’s allegations. They were working in favour of AL’s mayor candidate. The police also backed the ruling party,”
said BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He was speaking at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
Rizvi said, “Ruling party cadres are desperate to snatch people’s right to franchise without obstruction. An awful situation has been prevailing in the Khulna election areas.”
“The Commission turned one-eyed man and ignored BNP’s allegation instead of taking action against widespread irregularities of the AL men. The EC has surrendered to the government forgetting its own authority as an independent body. This Commission is like a photocopy of the government,” said Rizvi.
The BNP leader said, “The ruling party men were desperate to indulge in election irregularities due to the inactive role of the EC.”
Rizvi said that in most the voting centers the BNP candidate’s male agents were forced out while women agents and supporters were tortured and obstructed from entering polling stations.
He alleged that the AL mayor candidate’s musclemen established their control over most of the pulling centres resorting to terrorism.
Rizvi, however, said as per their party’s decision, they had asked their mayor candidate to stay there in the polls till the end.
On the other hand, BNP mayor candidate Nazrul Islam Manju also said that the ruling party men drove out his polling agents from most polling centres.
He said it after visiting different voting centres in the city. Manju also alleged that his agents were obstructed to enter many polling centres.
“The ruling party men also beat many of his polling agents in different polling centres,” Manju alleged.
