Massive awareness on fish production stressed

Side by side with ensuring necessary efforts towards boosting fish production, there should have adequate measures of good aquaculture practice as it’s very vital for boosting country’s export list,fisheries officials at a discussion here said.
Time has come to bring all the fish growers, traders, feed manufactures,sellers and others concerned under necessary training and motivation to enhance their level of knowledge in this filed.
All quarters like fish farmers, hatchery owners, fish sellers, fish meal manufacturers and sellers and the field level fisheries officers and staff should work together to this end. There is no alternative to substantial and sustainable promotion of good aquaculture practice, they added.
The observations came at the discussion titled “Safe Fish Production and Marketing: Our Responsibilities” held at conference hall of Barind
Multipurpose Development Authorities in Rajshahi city on Monday. District office of Department of Fisheries organized the discussion.
Begum Akhter Jahan, MP, addressed the discussion as chief guest with
District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani in the chair. Senior Assistant Directors Ruhul Amin and Dr Niaz Uddin and Assistant Director Jahangir Alam also spoke.
More than 45 persons comprising fisheries officials, fish farmers, hatchery owners, fish meal traders, wholesalers and other beneficiaries were present at the meeting.
During his keynote presentation, Dr Niaz Uddin says safe fish production and its marketing has become a big challenge at present and this is the high time for facing the challenge collectively.
To this end, emphasis should be given on safe fish farming besides promoting its production through the best use of hygienic fish feed alongside the existing natural resources.
In addition to the administrative measures, time has come to forge social resistance against the manufacturing of adulterated and unhygienic fish meals, its marketing and use of formalin in fishes.
Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector chief guest Begum Akhtar Jahan said safe fish production could easily be increased to a great extent if the natural resources were utilized properly.
She said the traders can keep their fishes live for a good number of days if they adopt some simple techniques instead of using formalin.
Lawmaker Akhtar Jahan suggested providing the farmers with latest
scientific technologies and knowledge for producing quality fish fries and fingerlings for more fish cultivation.
She called for involving more people in fish farming for the sake of meeting the protein demand as fish fulfill at least 60 percent need of the animal protein especially of the poor and marginal communities.
