Mass rally in Jaflong to demand stone quarry operation

I want work, I want rice, I want the stone quarry to survive Why the stone quarry is closed by the administration, Our demand is to open only one stone quarry, we have to pay. With such a slogan in mind, a huge rally was in Jaflong to demand that all stone quarries in greater Sylhet be run in an environmentally friendly and traditional manner. The rally was organized by the Greater Sylhet Stone Businessmen’s Unity Council at noon on Tuesday at Puli’s ground in Mama Bazar area of Jaflong under Sylhet District.
From Tuesday morning, people started gathering at the rally site with processions, festoons, banners and placards with various demands to open stone quarries. As the day progressed, the gathering place became full to the brim.
 Speakers at the rally said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu wanted this country to be for farmers and workers. But unfortunately, even after 47 years of independence, we have to agitate for rice, cloth. Mentioning that the stone quarry discovered by Bangabandhu will never be allowed to close, the speakers said that more than one million people of the country including the hinterland make a living by extracting, collecting and supplying stone from Jaflong, Bichnakandi, Bholaganj, Lova, Utma and Sreepur quarries of Sylhet. Do. Workers and traders have suffered due to the closure of the quarry.
 Hundreds of thousands of people in the region, who have lost their jobs due to the halt in quarrying, have lost their families. The footsteps of famine today in this marginal town without jobs. Thousands of small stone traders are on their way today. Thousands of small businesses went bankrupt today with bank loans. The closure of stone quarries has created a dire situation for people’s livelihood. Thousands of crores of rupees have been lost due to the loss of livelihood of more than 10 lakh people in a large area. Thousands of truck and tractor owners involved in stone transport, workers are living a dehumanized life deprived of income. Thousands of small traders and entrepreneurs have suffered due to the halt in buying and selling of goods at various local markets and outlets.
 They demanded that the stone quarries be made operational in the traditional way to provide employment to millions of working people by extracting stones for ages. Otherwise, in the interest of realizing this just demand, if necessary, a program like blockade and strike will be announced in Sylhet.
 Golam Hadi Chaiful, president of Sylhet Divisional Truck Owners Group, was the chief guest at the rally organized by the Greater Sylhet Stone Concerned Businessmen-Workers Unity Council, chaired by Abdul Jalil, Acting Convener of the organization and co-chaired by Sabbir Ahmed Fayez and Chhatra League leader Sohail Ahmed.
