Speakers at a function on Sunday put emphasis on creating mass-awareness for boosting tax collection for making the country economically self-reliant.
They mentioned the government has introduced various programmes to encourage more people towards paying income tax together with increasing the volume of tax collection.
The observation came at the inaugural ceremony of ‘Rajswa Halkhata’ to mark the celebration of Pahela Boishakh-1425.
Tax Zone of Rajshahi hosted the ceremony where a large number of taxpayers, businessmen and others concerned attended.
Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, addressed the discussion as chief guest with Dr Khandakar Ferdous Alam, Commissioner of Taxes, in the chair.
President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman, president of Tax Lawyer Association Advocate Md Mohsin and joint commissioner of Taxes Mirza Ashique Rana also spoke.
Dr Khandakar Ferdous told the meeting that the zone has realized income taxes of Taka 430 crore in the first nine months of the current 2017-18 fiscal year up by Taka 93 crore than corresponding months of the previous fiscal.
Number of taxpayers has also been increased to 2,12,829 during this financial year from 1,90,183 of the previous one in the zone consisting of the districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Chapainawabganj and Pabna.
“A target has been set to realize taxes of Taka 832 crore in the current fiscal and we are trying to attain the target by end of the fiscal,” said Dr Alam adding that the number of taxpayers is increasing gradually and the growth rate is significant.
To expand the tax network, various motivational campaigns like spot assessment, survey and rewards for the taxpayers have been introduced, he said.
Dr Ferdous said the zone has fixed target to identify 18,200 new taxpayers in the current fiscal.
Lawmaker Badsha said enhanced tax collection from the internal resources could be the effective means of reducing the dependence on foreign aid for executing the uplift programmes.
