Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and Kishoreganj District Administration jointly arranged a colourful rally, discussion , handbill distribution and documentary film marking the National Road Safety Day on Sunday.
A discussion meeting was held at local collectorate staff Club Auditorium on Sunday morning.
Deputy Commissioner Md Azimuddin Biswas attended as chief guest while ADC (General & DS) Torafder Md Akhter Jamil in the chair.
A.D.M Alamgir Hosein and RHD Executive Engineer Md. Rashedul Alam attended as special guest.
It was addressed among others by Kishoreganj Road Transport Association Member Secretary Sheikh Farid, Women Leader Bilkis Begum, Shafiq Kabir, School Teacher Ripa Akter and BRTA Assistant Director Engineer Shafiqul Alam Sarker. A colourful rally was brought out in the town led by D.C Md. Azimuddin Biswas on Sunday.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Government officials at a post-rally discussion here on Sunday day laid emphasis on ensuring safe driving, professional skill of drivers and obeying traffic rules to reduce road accidents.
They viewed this at the discussion organised by the district administration and Rangpur Circle of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) at the Deputy Commissioners’ conference room in observance of the “National Road Safety Day-2017”. Earlier, a rally participated by officials, drivers, supervisors, conductors, right activists, leaders of road transport workers and owners’ associations, rovers, scouts and students was brought out in the streets.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman attended the discussion as the chief guest with Additional District Magistrate Abu Rafa Md Arif in the chair.
Executive Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department Mahbub Alam Khan, Divisional Deputy Director of BRTA for Rangpur Circle Mohsin Hossain, President of District Motor Sramik Union Tazul Islam Mukul and President of district unit of “Nirapod Sarak Chai Andolan” Dr Zillur Rabbi addressed as special guests.
Dr Rabbi blamed inadequate skill of some drivers, faulty vehicles, roadside hat-bazaars, violation of traffic rules and using mobile phones while driving as the main reasons behind road accidents.
He said drying of various crops on roads, illegal occupation of roads, lack of adequate awareness among common people and pedestrians and overtaking on competition basis are the other causes behind road accidents.
Citing statistics of losses of human lives in road accidents in recent years here, Abu Rafa Md Arif stressed on ensuring adequate training of drivers and obeying traffic rules strictly by all concerned to avoid road accidents.
The chief guest suggested drivers, supervisors, helpers and transport workers to properly know the reasons behind road accidents and behave accordingly for reducing the extent of road accidents by ensuring safe driving on the roads and highways
Sylhet Correspondent says: The National Road Safety Day was observed in Sylhet on Sunday with the slogan ‘Shabdhanay Gari Chalabo, Nirapoda Bari Firbo’.
Sylhet District Administration and BRTA jointly organised a rally and a discussion meeting that was held at the Seminar Room of the Deputy Commissioner Office on that morning.
DD of Sylhet BRTA Abdus Sattar, presided over the meeting while DC of Sylhet Rahat Anwar, ADC AS Shohidul Islam, EXN of RHD Utfol Shamonto, President of Sylhet Press Club Ikramul Kabir were present.
The rally which started at DC office paraded different streets in the city.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Utmost importance should be given on enhancing drivers’ skills, awareness on traffic law and tendency to obey law among the public in general for road safety.
There is no alternative to awareness to prevent road traffic accidents which create grave concern. This was disclosed at a post-rally discussion by a host of speakers who urged all concerned to work together to bring a desired yield in this regard.

Additional District Magistrate Subrata Paul, Superintendent of Police Muazzem Hossain Bhuiyan, Deputy Director of BRTA Ashrafuzzaman, Executive Engineer of Department of Roads and Highway Nazmul Hassan and Executive Engineer of Department of Public Works Humayun Kabir addressed the meeting.
They unequivocally called for strict enforcement of traffic rules to reduce road accidents. If the drivers drive their vehicles carefully the existing number of road accidents could be reduced to a greater extent.
Subrata Paul told the meeting that government has taken initiative to establish training institute in each district to bring the drivers under training and refreshers training round the year.
Step has also been taken to incorporate the issue of road accident and its causes and prevention in the course-curriculum besides other various programmes to reduce the country’s road accidents by 50 percent within the next 15 years, he added.
BRTA Deputy Director Ashrafuzzaman said the country experiences over 5,000 road accidents every year that claim over 4,000 lives and injure a huge number of people.
Around 200 persons comprising government officials, human right activists, leaders of road transport workers and representatives of transport owners associations were present at the discussion.
