The Martyred Intellectual Day was observed here on Saturday by paying rich tributes to the luminary sons of the soil who embraced martyrdom at the fag-end of the War of liberation.
District administration poised to hold a discussion at local Shilpakala Academy in the evening on the occasion.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun addressed the function as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Syeda Farhana Kawnine in the chair. Civil surgeon Dr.Helal Uddin Ahmed, additional police Super Jakir Hossain, Vice-Chairman of Narsingdi Sadar upazila Safar Ali Bhuiyan , former principal of Narsingdi government college Surjakanta Das and former district muktijuddah commander Abdul Motaleb Pathen, among others, addressed it.
Government officials, various political, socio-cultural and volunteer organisations’ members, Zilla Muktijuddah Sangsad leaders, local journalists, teachers, students and elites took part in the discussion and paid homage to the great sons of the soil.
A candle light vigil participated by people from all walks of life was also organised in the evening which stretched from local Stadium to press club.
Chapainawabganj Correspondnet reports: People from all walks of life here on Saturday observed the ‘Martyred Intellectuals Day’ paying rich tributes to the intellectuals who were brutally killed by the Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators at the fag-end of the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
The observance began through placing wreaths at the monuments of the martyrs at Baliadighi under Shibganj upazil, hoisting of the black flags and national flag at half-mast atop all public and private buildings.
A discussion meeting arranged by the district administration was also held at Nawabganj Government College premises in the evening with deputy commissioner AZM Nurul Hoque in the chair.
Lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-1 (Shibganj) constituency Dr Shamil Uddin Ahmed Shimul attended the programme as the chief guest.
Among others, superintendent of police TM Mozahedul Islam, principal of Nawabganj Government College Professor Dr. Shankar Kumar Kundu, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Manzurul Huda, additional district magistrate Debendranath Orao and president of
Chapainawabganj Bar Association freedom fighter Advocate Abdus Samad attended it as special guests.
Netrakona Correspondent adds: State minister for Fisheries And Livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru MP today said that the Pakistani occupation forces with the help of local collaborators brutally killed the intellectuals, country’s bright sons of the soil, just two days ahead of the final victory to make the emerging nation intellectually vacuum.
“Pakistani military forces and anti-liberation forces with their premeditated ploy picked the brilliant sons of the soil up, blind -folded
and gunned them downed to turn the nation into a brain -empty state at thefag end of the liberation struggle in 1971 ” Khasru said.
The state minister said, the present government led by prime minister Sheikh Hasina has already brought most of the killers of the martyred intellectuals under trial and it would continue to bring others killers and war-criminals to book to free the nation from the stigma.
Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said these while addressing as chief guest at a discussion meeting held at Netrakona Muktijoddha complex here to mark the Martyred Intellectuals Day.
Netrakona district administration and District Muktijoddha Sangsad jointly organized the meeting.
Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Netrakona Main-UL-Islam, the meeting was
addressed, among others, by Superintendent Of Police, Netrakona Akber Ali Munshi, Mayor of Netrakona municipality Nazrul Islam Khan, war-injured Freedom Fighter Osman Gani

Mohammad Shamsuzzuha, former Commander of District Muktijoddha Sangsad Nurul
Amin and Freedom Fighter Abdur Rahim.
Khasru made a clarion call to the people of all walks of life to involve themselves in nation building activities by rising them above their self- interest following the ideology of the martyred intellectuals to build up a non-communal country and uphold the spirist of the liberation war.
