Martyred Intellectuals Day observed

The Martyred Intellectual Day was observed in the port city yesterday as elsewhere across the country with a call for completing the trial of the war criminals.
Different political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations arranged programmes including discussion meetings and Milad Mahfils to mark the day and paid rich tributes to the country’s golden son and daughters who were killed at the end of the War of Liberation in 1971.
Speakers at discussion meetings said local collaborators of the Pakistani forces under the banners of Al-Badrs, Al-Shams and Razakars brutally killed the think-tanks of the Bengali nation in a planned manner to cripple the nation intellectually sensing their sure defeat in the nine-month long bloody war.
They demanded for the execution of the verdict of the convicted fugitive killers of the intellectuals after bringing them back home.
National flags were hoisted half-mast at all public offices and important institutions marking the day.
Chittagong centres of Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar aired special programmes while local dailies published special articles highlighting the significance of the day.
Chittagong city unit of Awami League placed wreaths at local Shaheed Minar in the morning today and arranged a discussion meeting at party office Darul Fazal Market to mark the day.
Chittagong north and south district chapters of Awami League, Bangladesher Communist Party, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, Bangabandhu Samaj Kallayan Parishad, Muktijdder Bijoy Mela Parisad and Bangladesh Islamic Front arranged various programmes including placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar, holding of discussion meetings, cultural functions and Milad Mahfils to observe the day.
Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) and Chittagong Press Club (CPC) leaders placed wreaths at Shaheed Minar at one minute past zero hours yesterday.
CUJ President Reaz Haider Chodhury, CPC President Kolim Sarwar and General Secretary Suklal Das, CUJ General Secretary Mohammad Ali, joint secretary Chwdhury Farid and a number of incumbent and former CUJ and CPC leaders were present there.
Later, a discussion meeting under joint auspices of CUJ and CPC was held at CPC auditorium in the morning yesterday.
Chittagong District Administration, Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy and Shishu academy organized a discussion meeting, essay competition at Shishu Academy.
Bangladesh Chhatra League Chittagong city unit yesterday observed the Martyred Intellectual Day. They arranged a candle lighting programme at the killing ground (Boddho Bhumi) at Pahartali in the morning yesterday.
Besides, the authorities of Chittagong University (CU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, University of Science and Technology Chittagong observed the Martyred Intellectual Day paying tributes to the martyrs of the nation for the cause of country’s independence.
