Jordan Ayew scored twice to punish his former club as Lorient won 5-3 away to Marseille in a frantic match on Friday – condemning the home side to a fourth straight defeat and dealing a significant blow to its Champions League aspirations.
Ayew put the visitors ahead in the ninth minute and then set up center half Francois Bellugou four minutes later to stun the Stade Velodrome crowd.
Ghana winger Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew’s older brother and international teammate, pulled a goal back in the 59th minute and then center half Jeremy Morel made it 2-2 eight minutes later.
Left winger Romain Philippoteaux made it 3-2 to the visitors a minute later, only for Marseille substitute Michy Batshuayi to equalize seconds after coming off the bench.
Jordan Ayew, who was released by Marseille in January 2014, took his league tally for the season to 11 when he made it 4-3 in the 84th, before midfielder Mathias Autret compounded Marseille’s humiliation two minutes later.
Marseille remains in fourth place and is now two points behind third-place Monaco, which travels to play last-place Lens on Sunday, and only leads fifth-place Saint-Etienne on goal difference.
Lorient, which had lost three and drawn one of its past four league games, climbed away from the relegation zone and up to 14th spot.
Marseille started well and club top scorer Andre-Pierre Gignac missed a good chance in the sixth minute after being picked out by winger Florian Thauvin.
Jordan Ayew then made Marseille pay for that miss after running onto Philippoteaux’s backheel and striking the ball firmly past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda. He scored the equalizer when the teams drew 1-1 in December.
