Onkohla Marma of Jomkhola Village in Sonaichhari Union under Naikkhonchhari Upazila of the district has become self-reliant through papaya cultivation. Three months back, he started the cultivation by taking lease of 1.20-acre land for three years from a local person.
He prepared the land and later sowed the papaya seeds after collecting those from a local seed store.
He said, “I took loan from different NGOs and spent about Tk 2.5 lakh for the cultivation.
Upazila Assistant Agriculture Officer Shulok Barua advised me to collect papaya seeds and cultivate those.
” While visiting the papaya garden recently, Onkhola Marma said to this correspondent, “I planted 1,200 papaya trees on the 1.2-acre land.
If the weather remains favourable in the next one month, I will be able to market my produce properly.” Onkhola Marma rents out his motor-cycling services. He spends his income for the cultivation.
He is hoping to earn profit worth about Tk 10 lakh if the weather favours. “If I would get government help, I could turn my farm more developed,” he added.
