The Market Monitoring Cell of Chittagong District Administration in a bid to control price hike during the holy month of Ramzan yesterday visited three kitchen markets and a wholesale market in the port city and fined 16 shops TK 60.5 thousand on different grounds.
Separate teams of the Market Monitoring Cell visited the Bahaddarhat, Colonelhat and Kazirdwari kitchen markets and Chaktai wholesale market and cautioned the traders of kitchen markets not to sell the essentials in exorbitant prices.
The teams fined a total of 16 shops TK 60.5 thousand for not showing price list, realizing excessive prices, selling date expired goods and for not using BSTI approved weight scales.
Executive magistrates Morad Ali, Abdus Samad Sikdar, Ronjon Dey and Shanta Rahman led the monitoring teams. The Market Monitoring Cell also called upon the traders to sell the essentials as per prices that were fixed by the joint meeting between Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong and Merchant Associations leaders.
Executive magistrate Morad Ali said the market monitoring cell is continuing drives in different markets to ensure the fixed price of essentials for buyers of the port city.
The local administration, lawmaker, mayor and authorities concerned have taken steps to control price hike during the holy month of Ramzan.
The steps include mobile court, fair-price outlets for the common people, market monitoring cell etc in the port city.
Sources said, some of the importers of essential commodities and general merchants have started opening fair-price outlets for the common people in the port city.
The initiatives are claimed to have been aimed at smoother supply system of essentials during Ramadan. Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) A J M Nasir Uddin called upon the businessmen to control the price of essentials during Ramadan.
He said CCC will conduct two mobile courts in the holy month of Ramadan to control price hike. The said two mobile courts will conduct their raids along with five other mobile courts of district administration.
On the other hand, a Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) held a meeting with the business community leaders particularly the retail traders of essentials recently. The CMP commissioner Iqbal Bahar called upon the business community leaders not to increase price during Ramadan. In the meeting, CMP also took decision to deploy special teams at important market premises during Ramadan in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Chittag-ong district administration has started mobile courts at the markets from May 16 and the mobile court is continuing . Besides, Chittagong district administration has formed Market Monitoring Cell to control price hike during Ramadan this year.
The Market Monitoring Cell is visiting important markets including Reazu-ddin Bazar, Bohadd-arhat, Choumohoni Karnaphuli Market, Kajirdewri Bazar, Steel Mills Bazar etc now. The monitoring cell alerts the traders of kitchen market not to sell the essentials at higher prices. The Market Monitoring Cell also called upon the traders to sell the essentials as per fixed price that was fixed by the joint meeting of Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong and Merchant Associations leaders.

After holding the series of meetings, CCCI president Mahbubul Alam declared that the businessmen would not hike the price of essentials in the current Ramadan. Besides, the CCCI has opened the fair price outlets at the CCCI premises which was inaugurated on May 27.
However, Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CMCCI) also held separate meetings with the businessmen, stakeholders and social and political leaders in this connection. CMCCI president Alhaj Khalilur Rahman said, “Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. “We requested all businessmen not to hike prices during Ramadan.” CMCCI has also opened the fair price outlets at the KDS premises at Oxygen point which was inaugurated on May 29.
The Trading Corpo-ration of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling essentials in open market in the port city Chittagong from May 15. A total of 10 trucks of TCB are selling the essentials at the open market by trucks under the Open Market Sell (OMS) program here in the port city every day.
Under the OMS program, rice and other essentials including oil, flours, sugar etc are being sold at 10 spots of the city. A total of 10 trucks in different areas of the city including Andarkilla, Chhotopool, Newmarket, Agrabad, Press Club, New Market and Bahaddarhat are distributing rice and other essentials at low price. M A Latif MP also started fair price outlets at several areas in the city from Friday. He is distributing rice among the poor at Tk 20 per kg.
M A Latif said, “We know about your (business groups) stocks and price of the essential commodities in the international markets. So, don’t try to hike prices of the commodities in the name of shortage of supply and international price hikes.”
He also asked the businessmen especially the importers and wholesalers to sell the essential commodities according to the price of 15 days ago saying there is no price hike of the essential commodities in the international markets.
