The Education Ministry is going to set up a maritime university in Barisal, which will be the second of this kind in the country, the Ministry sources said. The first maritime university was established in 2013 in Chittagong and was named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University.
The Ministry has directed the officials to take the
initiative to start the work as early as possible, said the Ministry officials.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “The Education Ministry feels that a maritime university is essential in the region as Barisal is the land of rivers and canals, and Bay of Bengal.”
“The Ministry is working to finalize a draft proposing the establishment of the university. The Ministry has also completed the preliminary work in this regard,” the Minister said.
“We want to create skilled manpower suitable for the shipbuilding and ship maintenance, along with conducting multi-disciplinary marine research,” Nahid said.
The Ministry sources said that the Ministry would recruit people with expertise in this field, who may be from any relevant sector, such as the navy or other organisations.
Welcoming the ministry’s plan, Professor M Rafiqul Islam of Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of BUET, said that maritime university should be the highest centre for excellence in the maritime sector.
Rafiqul Islam expressed the hope that the university would be a specialized one and it should have qualified people with the highest degree in the field of maritime education.
“Hence, such an endeavour by present government is highly appreciated. We should by all means try to set up the university of an international standard in true sense, and not a college or an institute in disguise,” he said.
