The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has received complaints against several senior police officers, including an assistant commissioner (AC), lobbying to get release of 235 gold bars which was recovered from a private car in the city’s Rampura area in March so that they could grab the gold, sources in ACC said.
The AC asked an Officer-in-Charge (OC) in his room to release the gold bars. Not only that, some other senior police officers also tried to do the same task.
On condition of anonymity, an officer of the anti-graft body told The New Nation that the commission had received information in this regard and would scrutinize those.
When contacted, ACC Commissioner (Investigation) Shahabuddin Chuppu said that ACC gave permission to the Detective Branch (DB) of Police to file a case against the accused.
“As it is a case of embezzlement matter, it demands investigation. So, the ACC has taken decision to look into the matter. Few people have already been interrogated in this regard. In case of necessary, more people will be grilled”, he said.
Sources said that ACC questioned OCs of Rampura Thana Kripa Sindhu Bala and Nasim Ahmed and its Sub-Inspector (SI) Moniruzzaman and former Second Officer Quamruzzaman on Sunday.
ACC is likely to summon the assistant commissioner with some other high-ranking police officers shortly.
Sources say, the assistant commissioner created pressure on the police officers of Rampura Thana to release the gold bars worth Tk three crore on the night of March 16.
When the smuggling goods were under process of release from the thana as per directive of the AC, the DB police arrested smugglers Samir and Mahin.
Sources in DB said that SI Manjurul, Constables Akash and Wahidul of Rampura Thana seized a private car on March 13 from Banassree in the city on receipt of information from Roni, a source of police.
But they could not arrest any one staying in the car. By searching the car, the police members found 235 gold bars and distributed those among them.
When the news was exposed to public, the police personnel hid 70 bars in the car and recovered those in presence of some senior police officers on March 16.
