Several hundred vehicles in a 70 km tailback remained stranded at three points for 6th consecutive day on Tuesday stretching from Kanchpur to Daudkandi; Chandina of Cumilla and Feni to Sitakunda on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway due to the 4-lane highway development work, and thereby caused immense sufferings to the commuters.
The traffic jam was created on the Dhaka-Chittagong Road following excessive pressure of vehicles, slow movement of vehicles in the Toll Plaza areas and plying of vehicle in only one lane of 4-lane vehicle, said Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Daudkandi Highway Police station.
The construction of a railway overpass in Fatehpur of Feni also caused the tailback. Bus and truck drivers alleged that the construction work of the overpass began without keeping good alternative road, leading to the current situation.
Not a single bus was moving for an inch for hours, many people including relatives of patients did not know what to do. Without any food, water or toilet the misery of the travellers
knew no bounds. Children, women and patients suffered the most.
Many transport workers were seen sleeping on the highway beside their vehicles, as bus passengers looked exhausted without food and sleep.
There were many ambulances carrying patients that had to wait for long hours deteriorating the condition of the patients. Many businesses have also been affected due to the traffic congestions.
The situation improved after the authorities started diverting the Chittagong-bound vehicles to an alternative route in Fatehpur.
