Fear of arrests, attacks: Many BNP contestants still out of campaign

Many leaders, supporters and candidates of the Oikyafront and the BNP are still away from their respective constituencies following threats of attacks allegedly from rivals or fear of arrest centering the 11th general elections to be held on December 30.
The ruling party men have reportedly given threats to the supporters and voters of the BNP men not to campaign for the candidates of Sheaf of Paddy, report our district correspondents.
They have also allegedly handed over list of anti-government candidates leaders, supporters and voters to the cops for arresting them before polls.
BNP candidate of Dhaka-4 Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday alleged that he could not campaign as law enforcers and members of ruling Awami League took position in front of his house at Shyampur in the capital.
Salahuddin said this while addressing media in front of his house.
After he was barred from bringing out a procession on Tuesday, members of police and supporters of Syed Abu Hossen, the AL Grand Alliance candidate for the same constituency, have been keeping an eye on his house, Salahuddin claimed.
“Due to this, no leader was able to meet him at his house,” he said. BNP candidate for Chattogram-2, Azim Ullah Bahar, and 14 others were injured in an attack allegedly by AL men at Tokirhat under Fatikchhari upazila rcently.
Meanwhile, the motorcade of Jatiya Oikyafront’s candidate for Chattogram-5 Syed Muhammad Ibrahim came under attack while campaigning at Chittagong University’s Gate No 1 area on Sunday .
Major General (Rtd) Ibrahim, chairman of Bangladesh Kalyan party, held a press conference at Chattogram Press Club after the attack where he alleged that four of his supporters were injured and two vehicles were vandalised in an attack by AL men.
In Barishal, BNP candidate for Barishal-5, Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, has alleged that the ruling party and police were preventing him from electioneering and threatening the BNP men to leave the constituency.
Bilkis Jahan Shirin, Divisional Organising Secretary of the BNP, said, “We do not want to lose our strength as people are ready to vote for sheaf of paddy across the country. Now our main goal is to encourage people to go to the polling stations on December 30.”
Oikyafront candidate for Narayanganj-5 SM Akram alleged that police were arresting his followers and is in doubt whether he would be able to appoint polling agents at all 171 centres in his constituency.
In Rajshahi, three BNP candidates claimed that AL men were intimidating voters by carrying out attacks on the houses of leaders and activists of the opposition alliance.
At a press conference at the BNP office in the city’s Malopara area, they said they would contest in the polls though the Election Commission remained “silent on atrocities and harassment of BNP men”. BNP candidate for Rajshahi-2 Mizanur Rahman Minu alleged that arrests of party supporters continued.
“A sense of fear prevails among the voters as police and AL men are frightening villagers in most of the constituencies in search of BNP leaders,” Minu said.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday said in a press conference at BNP central office in Paltan that eight of their activists were killed and 12,588 were injured in 2,716 attacks after announcement of the election schedule.
It said so far 9,202 of their activists were arrested and 806 fictitious and false cases were filed against their men in the last 22 days.
He said, the government has used all its force to drive out BNP and Jatiya Oikyafront from the election field.
He accused the law enforcement agencies of direct involvement alongside the ruling Awami League men in the attacks on the opposition candidates and their supporters during electioneering.
