Despite restrictions by key job markets like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Malaysia, the country has witnessed a significant rise in manpower export in January-September period of the current year (2016).
According to a data available with the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), the sector has achieved a 45 percent growth during the period compared to that of the corresponding period.
During the period, a total of 546,275 Bangladeshi workers went to job destination countries. Of them, 91,484 are women who mainly found jobs in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, and the UAE.
The number of overseas jobs secured by Bangladeshi workers was 376,477 during the nine months of 2015, the data showed.
However, BMET officials and recruiting agency owners said that increased number of manpower recruitment by the non-traditional or slow markets helped the country increase manpower export.
Local manpower recruiters and officials hoped that nearly 0.8 million workers may get overseas employment this year as their outflow is rising rapidly.
Meanwhile, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia have lifted their ban on manpower intake from Bangladesh. But they are yet to start recruitment. Currently, Saudi Arabia only recruits domestic helps from Bangladesh.
Talking to The New Nation, Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) president Benjir Ahmed hoped that more than 0.25 million workers might be added to the country’s overseas job list in the remaining months of current year.
He said Oman and Qatar are continuing to recruit a significant number of workers from Bangladesh every month, which has a good impact on overseas job figure.
According to the BMET data, Oman recruited the highest number of workers from Bangladesh during the last nine months. The number was 145,218 followed by Qatar 90,735, Saudi Arabia 77,100, Bahrain 51,996, Singapore 42,091 and Malaysia 38,356.
The BAIRA president said Oman and Qatar mainly recruit workers for its construction sector. These countries also hired workers for other sectors like agriculture and housekeeping.
As the host country of World Cup Football 2022, Qatar is building several stadiums and infrastructures. So Bangladeshi workers have a high demand in that country, he said.
“We may get demand from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia shortly,” the BAIRA leader also hoped.
On the other hand, Jabed Ahmed, additional secretary of the ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment said they have taken a plan to utilise the full potential of old markets. They also are searching new ones.
To this effect, he said, the ministry is going to appoint a consultancy firm soon. “We are working to help increase out-bound jobs,” he added.
A total of 555,881 Bangladeshis found jobs in different countries in 2015. Of them, 103,718 were female.
Between 1976 and until September 30 of 2016, about 10 million Bangladeshis went abroad with jobs.
