Manpower export from Bangladesh is expected to get a big boost within the next couple of months with opening of greater scope of sending more local workers to two major overseas job markets, sources said.
According to official sources, the process of sending workers to Malaysia is likely to start in December. Besides, recruitment of Bangladeshi workers by Saudi Arabia would also start soon as the cabinet of the Kingdom on Monday approved recruitment to this effect.
“The Cabinet approved an arrangement on recruiting home workers between the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.
The Cabinet also approved establishment of labour attach, offices at Saudi embassies in Dhaka based on a recommendation by the Standing Committee of the Council of Economic Affairs and Development, the news agency reported.
Saudi Arabia in August lifted ban on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers after seven years, following efforts of the government to this end. Currently, there are some 60,000 female domestic helps among 1.3 million Bangladeshi workers in the Kingdom.
Malaysia – another major overseas job market for Bangladeshi workers would also be reopened soon as authorities of the two countries already reached an understanding on Bangladeshi job seeker to Malaysia.
Malaysian government suspended recruitment of foreign workers from all countries including Bangladesh in February this year.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam told reporters on Wednesday that the government would start the process of sending workers to Malaysia in December.
The decision was a result of the successful bilateral meeting with Malaysia’s Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot, held in the capital on Tuesday, the minister said.
The Malaysian Minister told the meeting that his country would hire Bangladeshi workers in three sectors – construction, plantation and manufacturing.
At the meeting, it was also decided that the workers would be sent through nearly 750 approved recruiting agencies; and the migration cost would be around Taka 40,000 each.
Earlier, Nurul Islam told The New Nation that a total 3 lakh 77 thousand 312 workers went abroad with jobs till July this year and the country received $15.5 billion as remittance in 2015.
He also said that the government would train 1 lakh 30 thousand workers, both male and female, for sending them abroad by next year.
He said under the plan, 439 technical training centres would be constructed at upazila level in phases to train the overseas going workers.
