UNB, Dhaka :
Turning down the bail plea sought by sedition-suspect Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, the Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate retained his second remand tenure.
After a hearing on the petition, magistrate Bikash Kumar Saha passed the order.
On February 25, another metropolitan magistrate Mahbubur Rahman, responding to a police petition, granted a 10-day police remand for Manna in a sedition case involving the army filed against him with Gulshan Police Station. Later, the remand was extended for another 10 days.
During the hearing, the defence counsel pleaded for Manna’s bail along with the plea of revoking his police remand as he fell sick seriously on the 4th day and immediately the accused was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Manna might undergo heart surgery, they said. Nearly 21 hours after Manna was picked up allegedly by plainclothes lawmen from a house at Banani on February 23 midnight, Rabid Action Battalion (Rab) confirmed the arrest of Manna and handed him over to Gulshan Police Station.
The detention took place a day after leaked audio phone conversations revealing that Manna was plotting to oust the Hasina government through violence, murder and by meeting with senior military officers.
