Manna arrested to keep him out of DCC polls, claims Nagorik Oikya

Speakers at a meeting here on Wednesday observed that the government arrested Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna to keep him out of the upcoming elections to the bifurcated Dhaka City Corporation (DCC).
They came up with the observation at a meeting organised by Nagorik Oikya at Jatiya Press Club in the city, demanding Manna’s immediate release.
Speaking on the occasion, Dhaka University teacher Prof Asif Nazrul said although a conspiracy
is going on against Mahmudur Rahman Manna and his followers, leaders of his party should continue Manna’s quest for the elections to the DCC.
He also alleged that some of media were used to spread propaganda against Manna in a plot to arrest him.
Nagorik Oikya adviser SM Akram said, “I promise we will compete in the DCC elections on behalf of Mahmudur Rahman Manna in case he is kept confined in jail.”
General secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) Abdul Malek Ratan said the government plotted against Manna sensing that he will win if he is allowed to contest the DCC elections.
He also said, the government wants to hold a ‘vote-less election for Dhaka City Corporation’ in the style of the January 5 parliamentary polls in 2014.
Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, Nagarik Oikya central committee member Fazlul Haque Sarker, its Dhaka south city unit convener Shahidullah Kaiser, among others, spoke at the meeting.
