Maniruzzaman Miah laid to rest

Noted educationist and former Vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Prof M Maniruzzaman Miah was laid to eternal rest on Tuesday.
He was buried at Banani Graveyard in the capital after his final and third namaz-e-janaza at Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayers. Maniruzzaman Miah, who had long been
suffering from old-age complications, died at Square Hospital on Monday. His body was kept at Square Hospital mortuary overnight. From the hospital, his mortal remains were taken to his Banani residence around 10am on Tuesday.
Later, the body was brought to Dhaka University’s Geography and Environment Department where his ex-colleagues and students paid homage to him. His first namaz-e-janaza was also held there.
Later, his body was taken to DU Central Mosque where his second janaza was held after Zohr prayers.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, its Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, former UGC Chairman AK Azad Chowdhury, DU Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, among others, attended the second janaza. Maniruzzaman Miah, a pro-BNP intellectual, remained out of public appearance doe long due to his illness. Born in 1935, he started his teaching career through Jagannath College after completing his masters’ degree from Rajshahi College.
He went to France in 1961 to obtain his PhD from Paris-Sorbonne University. Returning back home five hears later, he joined Dhaka University’s Geography and Environment Department. A confirmed bachelor, Maniruzzaman served as the Dhaka University VC from March 24, 1990 to October 31, 1992. Later, he was made Bangladesh Ambassador to Senegal.
