Chattogram Bureau :
Mabub ur Rashid Chowdhury, a resident of Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram, tried to donate a 40-square-foot raw skin to an orphanage on the day of Eid-ul-Adha without finding a buyer. But the orphanage authorities did not agree to come and take the skin. Because they were in fear of not to manage even the rickshaw fair by selling this leather. In the end, he rented a rickshaw for 100 taka from his own pocket and delivered the skin to the orphanage. He lamented that a decade ago, leather of this size was sold for Tk 1,500. The price of this leather was supposed to triple now due to inflation. That skin is now worthless. This suffering with the hides was not just hers. Most victims suffer from this problem.
However, warehouse keepers and tannery owners say that the demand for raw hides has declined due to lack of demand in the international market and low demand for leather products in the domestic market. That’s why prices have fallen.
It has been found out that the price fixed by the government for the raw hides of the victims has not been implemented due to the manipulation of the syndicate.
The warehouse keepers and tannery owners have bought leather at various prices. Not square feet, this time the sacrificial hides have been sold as a counterpart. As the seasonal traders were not seen much, the sacrificers delivered the skins to various mosques and madrasas at their own expense at the last minute. The price of each leather starts from 20 taka to 100 taka. Some have been buried in the ground without being able to donate anywhere.
