Manik Mia’s contribution recalled

The 50th death anniversary of the legendary journalist and founder editor of The Daily Ittefaq Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia was observed on Saturday.
On the occasion, a memorial discussion and Doa Mahfil was held in the Ittefaq Bhaban after Asr prayer, jointly organised by The New Nation and Manik Mia Foundation.
Speakers at the discussion stated that Manik Mia’s dream was to establish a Bangladesh where people will get the freedom of speech and justice without any barrier.
They said Manik Mia in his life worked for freedom, independence and ethical journalism. He also wanted to build a strong nation.
Attending the discussion, Chairman of the Editorial Board of The New Nation Barrister Mainul Hosein expressed his big disappointment that in Bangladesh atmosphere is absent for independent and fighting journalists like Manik Mia to grow.
He had great faith in the vital role of journalists for building a just and free country. Manik Mia had a hard and struggling life as a journalist.
The editor of the New Nation AM Mufazzal said Manik Mia was more familiar to younger to old age people of the country as Maik Mia than Tofazzal Hossain.
He pointed out that Manik Mia gave the opportunity to the financially insolvent meritorious university students to work as part time journalists in Ittefaq so that they could defray their educational expenses. Many students became benefited by it in their study life and many of them became famous journalists in their professional life.
Daily Nayadiganta editor Alamgir Mohiuddin, journalists and employees of The New Nation, Weekly Robbar and Manik Mia Foundation also attended in the discussion and Doa Mahfil.
In the morning, leaders and workers of different socio-cultural organisations, professional groups, individuals, family members and journalists paid homage by placing wreaths and offering Fateha in his graveyard at Azimpur.
Sylhet Bureau: The New Nation Sylhet organized a Milad and Doa Mahfil at Hazrat Shahjalal Dorgah Masjid after Zohr Prayer on Saturday.
Director of Bangladesh Betar Dr Mir Shah Alam, Sylhet City Corporation Ward Councilor Rezaul Hasan Koyes Ludy, City BNP’s Organising Secretary Miftahul Siqqiqui, Jamiat-e-Ulama Bangladesh’s joint secretary Maulana Abdul Malik Chowdhury, journalists, leader and activists of different social and political organisations, among others, were present.
