The High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Editor-in-chief of Bengali daily Manabzamin, for four weeks in a case filed on the charge of “publishing false news and circulating it on social media.”
The High Court Bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by the Editor Matiur Rahman.
The court also asked the Editor to surrender in the concerned tribunal after four weeks, said Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua who appeared in the court on behalf of the Editor-in-chief of Manabzamin.
In the observation, the court asked the law enforcers not to harass Matiur Rahman and the Editor has also been asked to provide necessary information to the law enforcers during the investigation, added the lawyer.
Saifuzzaman Shikhor, a ruling party lawmaker from Magura-1, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on March 9 this year.
Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Editor-in-chief Manabzamin and Al Amin, a reporter of the daily, along with 30 others have been sued under the Digital Security Act, on charge of publishing a report.
