A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in 2009. The condemned convict was identified as Rubel Mia, 30, son of Sarkul Zaman of Shalpamaizhati village in Kendua upaizla. According to the prosecution, Rubel used to torture his wife Fatema Khatun, 22, for dowry since their marriage in 2002. The couple had a daughter.
On August 25, 2009, Rubel hacked Fatema to death with a sharp weapon at one stage of altercation over dowry.
Local people caught Rubel red-handed and handed him over to police. Shafiqul Islam, brother of Fatema ,filed a murder case with Kendua Police Station on the following day.
Police submitted chargesheet against him on September 29, 2009. After examining the records and 12 witnesses Additional Sessions Judge Mohammad Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict.
