A court here on Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Bheramara upazila in 2009.
The condemned convicted is Tariqul Islam Titu, 36, son of Riazul Islam Rizu. He was tried in absentia. The court also fined him Tk 50,000.
According to the prosecution, Tariqul along with his family members used to torture his wife Mili Akhter Kutir since their marriage in 1998 over dowry.
As Mili’s family failed to give dowry as per the demand of Tariqul’s family they sent Mili to her father’s house at Noada Para village several times.
On July 6, 2009, Tariqul and his family members called Mili out from her father’s house and tortured her to death.
Later, victim’s brother Jahangir Islam filed a murder case against Tariqul.
After examining all the records and witnesses, Kushtia district and session judge (Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal) handed down the verdict.
