Man takes life after killing wife, 3 others

A man killed himself after stabbing four people, including his wife and mother-in-law, to death over a family dispute at Pallathol in Borolekha upazila of Moulvibazar district early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Nirmal Karmakar, 40, his wife Jolly Banarjee, 35, mother-in-law Laxmi Banarjee, 50, and neighbours Basanto Bhoumik, 55, and his daughter Sheuli Bhoumik, 13. All victims were tea garden workers.
Following information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the Nirmal’s body in hanging and four others on the yard of the house in a pool of blood. The bodies were sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies.
Besides, Basanto Bhoumik’s wife also received severe injuries now under treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, police said.
Nirmal hanged himself after murdering the four ill-fated persons at his home in Pallathol Tea Garden area, said Faruk Ahmed, Superintendent of Police (SP) Moulvibazar quoting the tea garden authorities.
Nirmal stabbed his wife Joly during an argument in the early hours and also attacked his mother-in-law Laxmi, neighbour Bashonto and his daughter Sheuly with a sharp weapon when they tried to save Joly, said Manager of the Tea garden ABM Mahbubur Rahman.
Jolly, Laxmi, Bashonto and Sheuly were workers at the tea garden, the manager said.
Barlekha Police Station ASI Roksana Begum said that drug addict Nirmal married Jolly a year ago and started living with his in-laws. Nirmal locked into an altercation with his wife around 5:30am and at one stage, he beat her mercilessly. Then, Jolly took shelter in her parent’s room where he hacked Jolly indiscriminately.
When Jolly’s mother and the two neighbours tried to resist Nirmal, he also hacked the trio.
After confirming their deaths, Nirmal killed himself by hanging in his room.
