Man lynched by mob over alleged cattle lifting

A 55 years old man, mentally upset, was beaten to death by the villagers in Fultola upazila in the district of Khulna, charging him as a ‘cow lifter.’
The victim has been identified as Golam Ali Sheikh Peyada from Madhupur village of Rudraghara Union in Khulna district’s Dumuria upazila.
The spiteful incident took place on March 25 the video whereof went viral on Facebook and other social medias.
Witnesses said, several men of Pathiabanda village mercilessly walloped the old man named Golam Ali Sheikh Peyada. The agitated villagers took for a cattle lifter when he was in a nearby field.
Ayesha Khatun, wife of the cattle owner Abdul Latif, started shouting as ‘thief, thief’ after seeing a rope in hand.
A number of men and women rushed and started kicking, boxing and punching and hitting with sticks. He was roped with the tree with head upward and the cruel men and women showed no mercy at all.
Golam Ali Sheikh requested the mob to give up cruelty and claimed that he was not a thief, but an innocent man. But the appeal was ignored. The barbarous activities continued till he died.
Jabeda Begum, the widow of the deceased, filed a case naming seven persons on charge of murder. About 20 to 25 unnamed people have also been made accused. Deceased Golam Ali Sheikh has been suffering from mental depression for last 15 years. He was given treatment in 2017.
