A man clubbed his wife to death at Sataish in Tongi under Gazipur district on Thursday night, on account of her refusal to pay dowry, a banned item in both religion and law of the land.
The deceased was identified as Jhorna Akhter from Sherpur. Her killer husband’s name is Nayan Mia, a tailor by profession at Sirajganj town.
Police arrested Nayan Mia on Friday morning. A murder case was filed with Tongi Police Station, Sub-Inspector of the station Md Mahmudul Islam said.
Quoting their neighbours, the police officer
said that Nayan began beating Jhorna, as was late in preparing dinner.
But contradicting the police official’s statement, her cousin Ruhul Amin alleged that Nayan used to beat Jhorna often for dowry since the early days of their marriage. He accused his brother-in-law of walloping her to death for dowry.
She was rushed to a local hospital with injuries, but died when she was being transferred to the Tongi Sadar Hospital.
