A man has been killed in an alleged shootout with the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB near the Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka.
Fear spread among the area’s residents as the law enforcers engaged in the gun battle with riders of a private car on Thursday afternoon, said RAB-10 operation officer ASP Sohrab Hossain.
The deceased has been identified as ‘Alamgir’, 35, but further details were not immediately unavailable.
His companion Abdul Barek, 42, has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with bullet injuries on his leg.
Both were taken to DMCH right after the firefight, but Alamgir died around 8:45pm from a bullet wound on his throat. RAB personnel had approached the car suspecting its riders to be muggers, Hossain told bdnews24.com.
“The gun battle started when the men inside the car began shooting at the RAB personnel. One of the three riders had managed to run away while the two others were wounded.”
Two guns, 16 rounds of bullets, Tk 27,000 in cash and a national ID card were found on the site of the shooting, he said. ASP Sohrab Hossain said the RAB team that engaged the car was patrolling that area since morning after the force received information of a possible crime to be carried out by a group of muggers.
A number of mugging incidents recently took place near Dhakeshwari Temple and adjacent areas, he added.
