Post-polls violence: Man killed in Narsingdi

A man was killed and 20 others were injured in a series of clashes between the supporters of newly elected chairman of Nilakkhya union parishad in Raipura upazila and the defeated chairman candidate over the recently held UP elections on Wednesday.
Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station, said there had been an enmity between the supporters of newly elected AL-backed chairman Tajul Islam and defeated AL rebel candidate Abdul Haq Sarkar over the election. As a sequel to the enmity, the supporters of both groups locked into an altercation around 10 am, triggering a clash.
The clash that started at Nilakkhya union spread to Darigaon and Gopinathpur unions that left 21 people injured. Of the injured, Liton Mia, 26, son of Maharaz of Abdullahpur village under Charsuburdi union, was taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Besides, several chases and counter-chases took place during the melee.
Meanwhile, 10 houses in Darigaon and Gopinathpur unions were looted and vandalised during the clashes.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the clashes.
