An alleged criminal was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Tongi of Gazipur district early Friday.
Deceased Delwar Hossain Delu, 35, was son of Rahim Uddin Gazi
from Arichpur area of Tongi. He was an accused of several cases, including murder incident, said Najmul Hasan Razib, Operation Officer of RAB-1.
Two RAB members Nayek Nasiruddin and Constable Hafizur Rahman-were injured during the reported gunfight, the RAB official said.
He said, “A team of RAB-1 launched a drive in the Tongi River Port area around 3:00 am after receiving information that an accused along with his 10-12 accomplices was gathering in the area for distributing money from Yaba sale. Sensing the presence of the elite force, Delwar and his cohorts opened fire targetting them, prompting the RAB personnel to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, Delwar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot. Two RAB members were injured during the incident.”
Later, Delu’s body was found wounded and sent to Tongi Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, he further said. A foreign-made pistol, a magazine, four rounds of bullets, a lighter gun, 196 Yaba tablets, three knives, and Tk10,000 were recovered from them at the spot.
