Customs officials detained a man with 6.60 kg of gold ornaments worth around Tk 3.21 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Thursday.
Detained Murshed Hossain was scheduled to board the QR638 flight of Qatar Airways, said Umme Nahid Akhter, Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House.
“Acting on a tip-off, the authorities issued an alert in the green channel. At one stage, Customs officials detained Murshed green channel on suspicion, the authorities recovered the cache of jewellery from him around 3:00am after a thorough search, ” she said.
He concealed the jewellery within crockery items inside his shopping bags.
The detainee arrived in the city by a flight of Qatar Airways, according to her.
A case has been filed with Airport Police Station in this connection, she added.
