An elderly man was arrested on charge of spreading rumour of child lifting in Sylhet on Thursday night.
The arrested was identified as Faruk Miah, 64, son of late Waris Ali of Golaghat Noatila in Fenchuganj, police said.
Local people said that Faruk Miah made a public announcement using the public address system of the local mosque at around 9:00pm on Thursday that a child lifter has entered in the village, spreading panic among the villagers.
Fenchuganj police officer-in-charge ABM Badruzzaman told that they rushed to the Golaghat Noatila village immediately after informed by the villagers.
In association with the locals, a thorough search was conducted in the area but no unknown outsider was found in the village, he said.
