Manchester City reached the Women’s Champions League (WCL) quarter-finals as they swept aside Fiorentina 5-0 in their last-16 second leg.
City led through Ellen White and the tie was wrapped up within 20 minutes as Caroline Weir doubled their advantage from the spot following a handball.
White added a second before half-time and Sam Mewis scored on the hour mark.
Mewis smashed home from close range late on for her second as City eased to an 8-0 aggregate win to go through.
The result means City will go at least one better than last season, when Atletico Madrid knocked them out at this stage of the competition.
The Spanish side were beaten by Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea in this season’s competition, eliminated 3-1 on aggregate after Wednesday’s 1-1 second-leg draw.
City came into the return leg off the back of outclassing the Italians in a one-sided initial encounter before beating Everton on Sunday for their ninth successive Women’s Super League win.
England striker White, who had helped City into a three-goal lead after the first leg, linked up with Lauren Hemp for both of her first-half goals in Florence.
Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor told BBC Sport: “We wanted to get to this point as a minimum because we’ve not been here for a while but we want more. We’re hungry for success.
“The players are really keen to move and progress further. We want to be in the latter stages of this competition.
“I don’t think there’s an easy tie in the quarter-finals. It’s a cup competition so you have to be ready and you have to be right over the two legs because if you’re not, you can see what happens.”
