In Ramgarh, Khagrachhari, a man named Chaithoyai Marma (60) was killed by hitting him with a brick and pouring petrol on his body. The incident took place at Masterpara in the municipal area on Tuesday (September 5) evening. On Tuesday night, police arrested a young man named Mohammad Sharif Patwari (25) for being involved in the incident. He is the son of Abu Ahmed Patwari, a neighbor of the slain Chaithoi. The family claims Sharif is mentally ill.
Meanwhile, Sharif Patwari, who was arrested on Wednesday (September 6th), pleaded guilty to murder and testified in court under section 164.
Police said a young man named Sharif Patwari, 25, suddenly attacked him on the road near his house on Tuesday evening while he was on his way to Chaithoai Marma Bazaar. The young man first hit her with a brick, seriously injuring her. Later, he poured petrol on the injured Chaithoyai and set the match on fire. At that time, the people of the area came and rescued him and sent him to the hospital. He died at the hospital.
Upazila health complex doctor on duty Naren Chowdhury said that 80 percent of Chaithoai Marmar’s body was burnt in the fire. Sharif set fire to their house at 11:30 pm on Monday. He also lodged a written complaint with the police on Tuesday.
Sharif’s father Abu Ahmed Patwari, who was arrested in connection with the murder, said he came to Ramgarh from Feni in the evening and heard about the incident. However, he did not know whether his son was involved in the incident. Abu Ahmed added that his son has been suffering from mental illness for the last two years. He was treated in different places including Chittagong. Ramgarh Police Station OC (Investigation) Rajiv Kar said Ansheu Marma, son of the deceased, filed a murder case with the police station on Tuesday night. Sharif Patwari was made the sole accused in the case.
Meanwhile, Ramgarh Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Md Raihan Uddin Kazemy said the accused Sharif Patwari on Wednesday pleaded guilty under Section 164 to the murder of Chaithowai Marmar in the Amli court of Khagrachhari Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Samiul Alam.
