A man was beaten to death by some people over a trifling matter at Humayun Rashid Chattar in Dakkhin Surma upazila on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, 50, son of Nurul Islam of Islampur village in sadar upazila of Munshiganj district.
Police said Nazrul had an altercation with a young man named Sourav over a trifling matter while traveling to Sylhet from Jaflong.
When they reached Humayun Rashid Chattar, Sourav along with some people again picked up a quarrel with Nazrul around 8 pm.
At one stage, they beat up Nazrul mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.
Later he was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injures in the night.
Jidan Al Musa, additional deputy police commissioner (south), said police arrested Sourav, son of Salekh Mia of Khagdiar Miror Para in this connection.
